Alabama General Contractor Commercial (NASCLA)

The Alabama Building Construction (General Contractor) license allows for commercial construction from the ground up, as well as modifications and additions to existing properties. It also allows for excavation and foundations for such buildings. This license does not allow for residential projects.
There are two required exams: the NASCLA trades exam and the Alabama Commercial Business & Law exam.

Alabama General Contractor State Requirements & Application

Any prime contractor or subcontractor working on projects where the cost of labor and materials exceeds $100,000 is required to have the appropriate Alabama contractor's license.
Applicants must submit verification of 3 years of experience and a financial statement.

Employees registering as the qualifying party for an applicant must be in full-time employment for 90 consecutive days immediately preceding the exam.
Alabama Administrative Codes

Applicants must have a minimum net worth and working capital of $10,000 in order to qualify for the lowest bid limit classification.
A - Not to exceed $100,000
B - Not to exceed $250,000
C - Not to exceed $500,000
D - Not to exceed $1,000,000
E - Not to exceed $3,000,000
U - Unlimited

Fees: The application fee for a new prime Alabama contractor license is $300. The renewal fee is $200. The application fee for a subcontractor is $150. To obtain an Alabama contractor license application and other forms, go to Alabama Application.

Alabama General Contractor Reciprocity

Alabama has established reciprocity with Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The NASCLA exam serves as the trades exam in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, U.S. Virgin Islands, and West Virginia.
