STEPS TO LICENSURE

Your Path to an Alabama Electrical License

Build your experience. Log 8,000 hours of electrical work. Up to 2,000 hours can come from approved education or apprenticeship.

Apply to the board. Submit your application to the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board. You can't schedule your exam until the board approves you.

Study with My Contractors License. Tab and highlight your books with our workshops, then take timed practice exams until you're scoring 95% or higher.

Schedule and pass your exam. Once approved by the board, you have 90 days to test with Prov. If you don't pass, submit a retake form and new fee to the board.

Get licensed. Send your license application and fee to the board after you pass.

Do I need a state license to do electrical work in Alabama?

Yes. The Alabama Electrical Contractors Board licenses electrical contractors and journeymen statewide. Your license is valid in every city and county.

Which code book is on the Alabama electrical exams?

The Electrical Contractor and Journeyman exams are based on the 2023 NEC. You can also bring the American Electrician's Handbook, 17th edition.

What happens if I don’t pass?

What score do I need to pass?

The passing score for every Alabama electrical exam is 75%. Each exam includes 10 unscored pretest questions, so your score is based on the rest. Here's what that means for each exam:

Electrical Contractor: 75 out of 100 scored questions
Journeyman: 53 out of 70 scored questions
Business & Law: 23 out of 30 scored questions

Do I need the separate Business & Law exam?

Usually not. The Electrical Contractor exam includes 30 business and law questions. The separate exam is for NASCLA Electrical Contractor candidates and out-of-state contractors applying through reciprocity.

How do I keep my license active?

Electrical contractors complete 14 hours of board-approved continuing education every two years, including 7 hours on the NEC. Journeymen should check with the board for current renewal rules.
