West Virginia

West Virginia has three different types of licenses: Residential Contractor, Multi-Family Contractor, and General Building Contractor.

All 3 licenses can do residential, however Residential & Multi-Family Contractors cannot do commercial work. Multi-Family can do work on structures with two or more residential units (apartments, townhomes, etc.) and General Building Contractor has no restrictions.

In West Virginia, a license is required for any residential job over $5,000, or any commercial job over $25,000.

West Virginia General Contractor License (NASCLA)

The West Virginia General Contractor's license allows the builder to bid on, build, or modify any type or size of commercial or residential property.

There are two required exams: the NASCLA commercial trades exam and the West Virginia Business Law exam. Once you pass the NASCLA exam, your passing score can also be used in other states to get commercial GC licenses. For a current list of states that accept NASCLA: Click Here

West Virginia Residential Contractor License

The West Virginia Residential license allows for residential construction from the ground up, as well as remodeling existing residential properties.

There are two required exams: the West Virginia Residential trades exam and the West Virginia Business Law exam.

West Virginia General Building Contractor License

The West Virginia General Building Contractor license allows the builder to bid on, build, or modify any type or size of commercial or residential property.

There are two required exams: the West Virginia General Building Contractor Exam and the West Virginia Business Law and Project Management Exam.

Alternatively, the NASCLA exam can be taken in place of the General Building Trades exam.

West Virginia Multi-Family Contractor License

The West Virginia Multi-Family Contractor license allows the builder to bid on, build, or modify multi-family residential structures or work incidental to their construction, maintenance or repair. Multi-family residential structure means a structure containing two or more residential units.

There are two required exams: the West Virginia Multi-Family Contractor Exam and the West Virginia Business Law and Project Management Exam.

West Virginia Business Law and Project Management

The West Virginia Business Law exam is required for all contractor licenses in West Virginia. It is a separate test based on the book Business and Project Management for Contractors, West Virginia.
