Which T-Series Electrician Exam is for You?

Each exam prep covers a different scope of the 2020 NEC. Find the path that matches your license goal and get the prep built for it.

Master

ICC T16 — Master Electrician

The broadest scope. The highest bar. The license that puts permits, projects, and your business in your hands.

Journeyman

ICC T17 — Journeyman Electrician

You’ve put in the field time. The T17 is where that experience becomes a credential and opens the door to independence.

Residential

ICC T18 — Residential Electrician

A focused path. Targeted prep. The residential license that proves your skills on paper.

What’s Changed Between the 2017 and 2020 NEC

The 2020 NEC made surge protection mandatory for the first time — a new Article 242 replaced the old surge-arrester rules, and dwelling-unit services now require a listed device as a baseline, not a recommendation. GFCI protection was extended to 250-volt receptacles in required locations (2017 only covered 125-volt), and coverage expanded to all basements, finished or not. AFCI protection was extended to kitchens and laundry areas. A new rule also required outdoor emergency disconnects for one- and two-family dwellings, changing how services get planned from the start.

This is the edition where studying either direction costs you. Prep built on the 2017 code leaves you missing every one of these additions. They're new requirements, not clarifications, so there's no "close enough." Prep built on the 2023 code teaches you rules that go further than what's required yet, like the expanded surge protection scope for multifamily and healthcare occupancies — content that's simply not on a T-series exam.

MCL's T-series prep is built exclusively on the 2020 NEC. Not a version blended from the edition before or after — just what your exam tests.

Is This Your Exam?

T-series adoption is growing as jurisdictions transition to the 2020 NEC.

Missouri accepts the T16 in St. Charles County for Master and recognizes both the Missouri statewide license and the St. Louis City electricians' license.

Kansas’s confirmed jurisdictions include Sedgwick County/Wichita running on the T16 for Master licenses.

Indiana approves the T16 for Master in Indianapolis/Marion County.

Not on this list? Your jurisdiction may still test on the T-series. Check with your local building department or licensing authority before you register.
