Pass once, work across Kansas

Kansas doesn’t issue electrician licenses at the state level. Cities and counties do. But the exams are standardized: pass one and meet the experience requirement, and every Kansas city and county that licenses electricians will accept your result. You never retake the exam when you work in a new county, though you do still apply to each one for its own license.

Its Open Book, but You’re on the Clock

You get about three minutes per question, which isn’t enough to look up every answer. The International Code Council (ICC), the organization behind the Kansas Standard exams, says so in its own candidate bulletin. The way to finish on time is to find answers fast, and that’s what MCL’s course trains you to do. You’ll learn to highlight and tab your NEC so you can find what you need in seconds.

STEPS TO LICENSURE

Your Path to a Kansas Electrical License

1

Get your experience. Two years working under a licensed journeyman, residential, or master electrician (up to one year can be trade school with 930+ program hours). For master: hold your journeyman license for two years.

2

Call your city or county licensing office. Confirm they accept the Kansas Standard exams (KGH, KGD, KGX) and whether you need their approval before you test.

3

Study with MyContractorsLicense. Highlight and tab your 2017 NEC, then practice until you score 95% or better on three full practice exams.

4

Book and take your exam. Register through Pearson VUE and bring your 2017 NEC and Ugly’s reference book. You’ll see your result right away; if you need a retake, you can test again after 10 days.

5

Apply for a license. Send your pass result and experience documentation to your city or county. Keep it active with 12 hours of continuing education every two years.

KANSAS ELECTRICAL FAQS

What You Need to Know

Does Kansas have a statewide electrician license?

No. Cities and counties license electricians. A passing score on a Kansas Standard exam, plus the experience requirement, counts as proof of competency in any Kansas city or county that licenses electricians.

Which NEC edition is on the Kansas exam?

The 2017 National Electrical Code. The older 2014 NEC versions of the Kansas Standard exams (565, 558, 554) are being retired and will no longer be able to be booked after December 1, 2026.

What happens if I don’t pass?

How do I keep my license active?

Kansas law requires at least 12 hours of continuing education every two years (or 6 hours per year), including code training. Check with your city or county for course approvals.
