How to Get Your Kansas Contractor License

Kansas doesn't issue a statewide contractor license. Instead, cities and counties license general contractors and electricians locally.

The good news: most Kansas jurisdictions use the same set of Kansas Standard International Code Council (ICC) exams, administered by Pearson VUE. Pass once, and you can usually take that score to other Kansas jurisdictions that accept it. Every exam is open book, and you need a 75% to pass.

My Contractor's License gives you the approved reference books, tabbed and highlighted, plus online courses and practice exams built around exactly what's on the Kansas Standard exams.

KANSAS FAQS

What You Need to Know

Does Kansas have a statewide contractor license?

No. General contractor and electrician licensing is handled by cities and counties. Corporations and LLCs still have to register with the Kansas Secretary of State.

Which exam do I take?

Most Kansas jurisdictions use the Kansas Standard ICC exams listed above. Check with the city or county where you'll work to confirm your class.

Can I use my Kansas exam score in more than one jurisdiction?

Often, yes. Wichita/Sedgwick County and Johnson County both accept Kansas Standard ICC results. Each jurisdiction still has its own application, insurance and fee requirements.

Are the exams open book?

Yes. That's why tabbed, highlighted references matter: the exam rewards knowing where to find the answer quickly.
