My Contractors License’s course prepares you to pass the KGH, the Kansas Standard Journeyman exam. To earn the license, you’ll also need two years of field experience under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman, residential, or master electrician. Up to one of those years can come from trade school if your program was at least 930 hours and you have a certificate of completion.
You can start the course before you finish your hours, so you’re ready to test the moment you qualify. Your city or county verifies your experience when you apply for your license.
Once you pass the KGH and meet the experience requirement, every Kansas city or county that licenses electricians will accept your result as proof of competency. If you take a job in another county, you won’t have to retake the exam.

Is the KGH exam the same as the ICC G17-N journeyman exam?
No. Both journeyman exams are based on the 2017 NEC, but the KGH is ICC's Kansas version, graded to the 75% passing score Kansas law requires. The G17-N exam passes at 70%. Always check with your local jurisdiction to confirm your exam type.
How long should I study?
Plan to study until you score 95% or better on three full practice exams. That's the same bar our guarantee uses.
Can I take it online?
The exam is scheduled through Pearson VUE. Check Pearson VUE for current test center and online options when you register.
Do I need approval before I test?
Some Kansas jurisdictions want you to apply with them first. Call your city or county before you schedule.
