Bring valid government ID and only permitted, pre-tabbed references. Exams are computer-based, open-book, and require a 75% passing score. Eligibility to test is valid for 90 days from AECB approval.

Alabama Electrical Contractors State Requirements & Application

  • Alabama licenses Electrical Contractors (unlimited), Electrical Contractors – Restricted, and Electrical Journeymen statewide. Licensing is required for individuals engaged in the electrical contracting business or performing journeyman work.
  • Applications are reviewed by the Board; when approved, candidates are authorized to schedule with Prov and must test within 90 days. Candidates who fail or whose eligibility expires must reapply to the Board before retesting.
  • Contractor path: You must pass the trade exam (Alabama Electrical Contractor or NASCLA National Electrical Contractor) and the Electrical Contractor Business & Law exam.
  • Exams are open-book. References may be highlighted and permanently tabbed; no loose notes, moveable tabs, or photocopied books are allowed. A government-issued photo ID is required at check-in.
  • Definitions/scope of work are established by Alabama Administrative Code 303-X-2-.01.

Alabama Electrical Contractors Reciprocity

Alabama offers reciprocity options for Electrical Contractors with select states. Business & Law is not waived, and applicants must meet all Alabama requirements. Check the AECB website for current reciprocity partners and instructions.

Alabama Electrical Contractors Permitted Work

An Alabama Electrical Contractor may engage in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical work to applicable standards and codes statewide, including design, planning, lay-out, and direct supervision of electrical construction activities. Journeymen perform electrical work under appropriate supervision. See Alabama Administrative Code 303-X-2-.01 for definitions and scope.
