What Is the Arizona Residential Electrician License?

The Arizona Residential Electrician license (CR-11) is issued by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (AZ ROC) and authorizes you to perform electrical work on residential structures — single-family homes, duplexes, and similar dwelling units. It is a separate license track from the commercial Master Electrician/Unlimited (C-11) license and is specifically scoped to residential electrical work.

If your focus is residential electrical contracting in Arizona, this is your credential. It's also a solid foundation for those who eventually want to pursue the Arizona Master Electrician/Unlimited license.

    Arizona Residential Electrician License Requirements

    1. Experience

The applicant must have at least 4 years of verifiable experience in residential electrical contracting work.

    2. Required Exams

Applicants must pass the following exams:

    • Arizona Statutes and Rules Exam (SRE): Open-book, online exam covering AZ contracting laws
    • Trade Exam: NASCLA Residential Electrical Exam or Arizona Residential Electrical Exam (state-specific)
    3. Background Check

All individuals on the application must complete a background check before applying.

    4. Business Registration

If applying as an LLC or Corporation, registration with the Arizona Corporation Commission is required.

    5. Bonding Requirement

A contractor's license bond is required. The bond amount varies based on annual business volume.

    6. Application & Fees

Submit your application through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Application fees apply and are subject to change — visit roc.az.gov for current fee schedules.

    7. Identification

A valid government-issued photo ID is required for all applicants.

About the Arizona Residential Electrician Exam

    • Residential load calculations
    • Service entrance and panel installations
    • GFCI and AFCI protection requirements
