Steps to Obtain Your North Carolina Electrical License

Get Exam Approval

NCBEEC reviews your application and qualifies your exam(s) based on license type (Electrical Contractor or Fire Alarm/Low Voltage). Once approved, you’ll receive instructions to test with PSI.

Schedule with PSI

After approval, schedule your Trade and (if required) Business/Law exams at PSI: PSI – Test Takers. Select the North Carolina Electrical program to view current exams and bulletins.

Pass Exams & Get Licensed

Pass the required PSI exams, then submit any remaining documents, fees, and insurance to NCBEEC to activate your license.

North Carolina Electrical Contractors may plan, install, maintain, and repair electrical systems for light, heat, power, and control in accordance with the North Carolina Electrical Code and local ordinances. Scope varies by classification and qualifying limits established by NCBEEC.

North Carolina Fire Alarm / Low Voltage Contractors may install, service, and maintain limited-energy systems (including fire alarm and communications) within the voltage and system limitations defined by NCBEEC and the adopted codes.
