Whether you're pursuing a Limited, Intermediate, or Unlimited electrical contractor license in North Carolina, our pre-highlighted, tabbed exam prep course is built to get you through the state exam on your first attempt.
NC Electrical Contractor License Levels: Limited, Intermediate & Unlimited
North Carolina electrical contractors are licensed by the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC). The state uses a three-tier licensing system based on the size and voltage of the projects you're authorized to perform. Choosing the right license level depends on the scope of work you plan to take on.
⚡ Limited Electrical Contractor
Authorizes electrical work on projects with a total value up to $125,000 and systems operating at 600 volts or less. Ideal for smaller residential and light commercial work. This is the entry-level contractor license in NC.
⚡⚡ Intermediate Electrical Contractor
Authorizes electrical work on projects with a total value up to $500,000 and systems operating at 600 volts or less. Covers a broader range of commercial and residential projects for growing contractors.
⚡⚡⚡ Unlimited Electrical Contractor
Authorizes electrical work on projects of any size and value, including systems operating above 600 volts. The highest license tier — required for large commercial, industrial, and high-voltage work in North Carolina.
All three license levels require passing the same NEC-based trade exam. The primary difference is the qualifying experience and financial documentation required at the time of application. Our exam prep course prepares you for the NC electrical contractor exam regardless of which tier you are applying for.
North Carolina Electrical Contractor License Requirements
1. ExperienceApplicants must demonstrate verifiable electrical work experience. The amount and type of experience required varies by license level. Contact the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors to confirm current requirements for your target tier.
2. Required ExamAll three license levels require passing the NC Electrical Contractor Trade Exam — an open-book exam based on the National Electrical Code (NEC). There is no separate business and law exam for NC electrical contractors; the trade exam covers applicable state statutes and rules.
3. Financial StatementApplicants must submit a financial statement demonstrating the minimum net worth required for their license level. Requirements increase with each tier — Unlimited applicants must meet a higher net worth threshold than Limited applicants.
4. Application & FeesSubmit your application through the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Application and exam fees apply. Visit ncbeec.org for current requirements and fee schedules.
5. IdentificationA valid government-issued photo ID is required for all applicants.

About the North Carolina Electrical Contractor Exam
The NC Electrical Contractor exam is an open-book test based on the National Electrical Code (NEC). The same exam is used for all three license tiers — Limited, Intermediate, and Unlimited. Your license level is determined by the application qualifications you meet, not a different version of the exam. Topics covered include:
- NEC wiring methods, installation requirements, and code applications
- Load calculations and electrical system sizing
- Service entrance, feeders, and branch circuit design
- Commercial and industrial electrical systems
- GFCI, AFCI, and overcurrent protection requirements
- Grounding and bonding
- North Carolina electrical contractor statutes and rules
Because the exam is open-book, the ability to navigate your NEC quickly and accurately is critical. Our pre-highlighted books and tab sets are designed to save you time on exam day — every mark and tab is placed strategically.
