    Virginia Master Electrician License Requirements

    1. Experience

    Applicants must have verifiable experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician, including documented hours working on electrical systems. Contact the Virginia DPOR to confirm current experience requirements before applying.

    2. Journeyman License

    In most cases, applicants must hold or have held a valid Virginia Journeyman Electrician license before qualifying for the Master Electrician exam. Verify current prerequisites with DPOR before applying.

    3. Required Exam

    Applicants must pass the Virginia Master Electrician Trade Exam — an open-book exam based on the National Electrical Code (NEC) covering advanced wiring methods, load calculations, service design, system planning, and Virginia electrical statutes.
