NASCLA Commercial General Contractor Requirements & Application

The NASCLA Exam is available for applicants seeking licensure as a Certified General Contractor, Certified Building Contractor, or Certified Residential Contractor in Florida.

General Terms: A “contractor” is the person responsible for construction-related activities, including building, altering, or improving structures. Contractors for structures over 50 feet, including demolition of steel tanks and other high structures, may require certification.

  • Certified Contractor: A contractor with a state-issued certificate, allowing work in any Florida jurisdiction without additional local certification requirements.
  • Registered Contractor: A contractor registered for work only within a specific jurisdiction, meeting local competency requirements.

Qualification Methods:

  • A four-year construction-related degree from an accredited college (3 years’ experience credit) and 1 year of relevant experience.
  • One year as a foreman and three years of college-level coursework.
  • One year as a worker, one year as a foreman, and two years of college-level coursework.
  • Two years as a worker, one year as a foreman, and one year of college-level coursework.
  • Four years as a worker or foreman, with at least one year as a foreman.

Insurance Requirements: Minimum General Liability insurance for General and Building Contractors is $300,000 (public liability) and $50,000 (property damage). For all other categories: $100,000 (public liability) and $25,000 (property damage).

NASCLA Commercial Exam Reciprocity

The NASCLA exam can be used as the trades exam in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, U.S. Virgin Islands, and West Virginia.

Florida NASCLA Commercial Exam Permitted Work

The NASCLA Exam is accepted for Certified General Contractor (CGC), Certified Building Contractor (CBC), and Certified Residential Contractor licenses. CGC licensees can build commercial structures over four stories; CBC licensees can build structures up to four stories.
