Why Memorization Is the Wrong Way to Study for Open Book Exams
One of the biggest mistakes people make when preparing for open book contractor exams is trying to memorize answers. These exams are not built that way anymore. The questions are pulled from large test banks, and two people taking the same exam will almost never see the same set of questions.
Because the exam isn’t static, memorization quickly becomes unreliable. You might spend hours trying to lock in specific questions and answers, only to never see them on your test. This is why memorization is not only inefficient, but often counterproductive.
Since these exams are open book, the real skill being tested is not memory. It’s navigation. You are allowed to bring the reference books into the room, which means you are walking in with every answer you could possibly need. If you are fast and comfortable finding information in the books, the exam becomes much easier to manage. Some questions are very direct. They might line up with a single definition or sentence in a book, making them easy to look up. Other questions are broader and require an understanding of a concept that spans multiple paragraphs or sections.
When studying, it’s important to slow down when a question doesn’t fully make sense. Instead of just memorizing an answer, take the time to read the full section. Understanding the context helps you visualize what the question is referring to and how it applies to a real construction scenario.
Open book exams are all about knowing the books, not specific answers. Knowing where information lives, how the books are organized, and how different topics connect is far more valuable than trying to memorize isolated facts. When you study the right way, the exam feels less like a test and more like a search exercise you’re already prepared for.
