State Requirements & Application

Requirements:

  • Requires 4 years of experience.
  • Anyone engaged in construction-related contracting in New Mexico must have a license.
  • The New Mexico Business and Law exam must also be passed to obtain your contractor's license.
  • Pre-Approval is required to sit for the exam, typically taking about 7 business days.
  • New Mexico issues contractor licenses in about 100 different classifications. These classifications are detailed in the New Mexico Administrative Code, Title 14, Chapter 6.
  • Definition of a contractor in New Mexico can be found in the Construction Industries Licensing Act, NMSA 1978, Section 60-13-3.

New Mexico does not offer reciprocity with any other states.

Permitted Work

This license allows you to erect, alter, repair, or demolish residential and commercial buildings and certain structures, excluding those covered by the EE, GA, GF, or MM classifications. Includes all work described by the GB-2 and GS specialty classifications.
