North Carolina General Contractor Requirements & Application

Take the test before submitting your application. If approved for the NC Builder license and later opting for the NASCLA exam, submit:

  1. A copy of your exam results
  2. Proof of score transcript from PSI (how to order transcript)
  3. A cover letter requesting approval based on your NASCLA test
  4. As of January 1, 2020, North Carolina requires all Contractors to pass the North Carolina Business Law and Project Management Exam

Financial Requirements:

  • Limited - Project limit: $500,000. Minimum assets exceeding liabilities by $17,000 or a net worth of $80,000.
  • Intermediate - Project limit: $1,000,000. Minimum assets exceeding liabilities by $75,000.
  • Unlimited - No project size limit. Minimum assets exceeding liabilities by $150,000.

The NASCLA Accredited exam enhances exam quality and mobility for contractors across jurisdictions, with states like Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, and more accepting it.

Experience Requirements: Submit three Letters of Reference (not from family or related businesses), on letterhead or notarized.

The NASCLA exam serves as the trades exam in multiple states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, and others.

North Carolina General Contractor Permitted Work

This license allows construction for both Commercial and Residential properties.
