How To Get Your New Mexico General Contractors License

If you have been a sub-contractor or have worked as a job superintendent and thought about getting your General Contractors in New Mexico, it may be easier than you think. Here are the steps.

What are the steps for getting a General Contractor License in New Mexico?

  1. Submit an application to be a Qualifying Party
  2. Pass a General Contractor Trades exam
  3. Pass a General Contractor Business Law exam
  4. Submit an application to the state of New Mexico

There are 2 types of General Contractor licenses in New Mexico

  1. GB-2 Residential Building Contractor
  2. GB-98 General Building Contractor

We offer test preparation for the builder classifications the GB-2 and GB-98. The GB-2, which is residential, allows you to build houses and multi-family units up to four units. We also can prepare you for the GB-98 exam, which is the unlimited builders license. This license is used for residential, commercial, multi-family, and has no project size limit.

  1. Submit your application Submit your Qualifying Party certificate application to the New Mexico Contractor board for approval. You must receive approval by the board to sit for the contractor’s exams. New Mexico uses PSI to manage their application process. They are extremely efficient, and you should expect a response back within two weeks.

  2. GB-2 Requirements

    1. Must be 18 years old
    2. A bond in the amount of ten thousand dollars ($10,000).
    3. Requires two years of foreman level practical or related trade experience

    GB-98 Requirements

    1. Must be 18 years old
    2. A bond in the amount of ten thousand dollars ($10,000).
    3. Requires four years of foreman level practical or related trade experience, of which at two years must be commercial experience.
  3. Once you have received your approval, you should study and prepare for your exams. In New Mexico you are required to pass a trade exam and a business and law exam. The GB-2 is a residential license and for commercial projects a GB-98 license is a commercial license. If you are getting a GB-98 you will take both the GB-2 exam along with the GB-98 trade exam.

  8. 50 multiple choice questions. You must get 75% of the questions correct (38 of the 50).

  10. The New Mexico General Builder GB-2 Residential Contractor

  • Entirely open book exam.New Mexico GB-2 (9 Trades Books)
  • The exam is 80 multiple choice questions. You must get 60 questions correct or 75%.
  • 225-minute time limit
  • The New Mexico General Builder GB-98 Exam

    1. Entirely open book exam. New Mexico GB-98 (15 Trades Books)
    2. The exam is 100 multiple choice questions. You must get 75 questions correct or 75%.
    3. 310-minute time limit

    GB-2 and GB-98 Prep Course Study Package. Keep in mind if you are getting a GB-98 License you will have to take the GB-2 exam as a part of that license. We offer a combo package for the GB-2 and 98 exams when you need both.
