North Carolina Residential Requirements & Application

  • License required for any job over $40,000.
  • Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the exam.

The license has three types:

  • Limited: Financial limit of $500,000 per project; requires assets exceeding liabilities by $17,000, verified with audited financial statements.
  • Intermediate: Financial limit of $1,000,000 per project; requires assets exceeding liabilities by $75,000, verified with audited financial statements.
  • Unlimited: No limit on project size; requires assets exceeding liabilities by $150,000, verified with audited financial statements.

Experience Requirements

  • Applicants must submit three (3) Letters of Reference.
  • Reference letters must demonstrate good character, competence, and integrity, and should be on business letterhead or notarized if not. References from family or interrelated companies are not accepted.
  • Applications without the required references will be incomplete and returned.
