    South Carolina Limited Exam Requirements & Application

    • License is required to practice contracting in South Carolina.
    • Complete the test before applying for the license.
    • Submit application fees, a financial statement, passing test scores, and an experience affidavit.
    • South Carolina Business and Law exam is required.

    Financial Statement Requirements:

    • Groups 1 and 2: Owner-prepared financial statement with affidavit, or Surety Bond Form for General Contractors.
    • Groups 3 and 4: Financial statement compiled by a CPA with all GAAP disclosures, or Surety Bond Form.
    • Group 5: Audited financial statement by a CPA, or Surety Bond Form.

    Surety Bonds: The South Carolina Licensing Board can accept a surety bond in lieu of a financial statement for both renewals and initial applications. For Group 5, a $500,000 bond is required.

    Experience Requirements: 2 years of experience within the last 5 years in the classification of work for the applied license.

    Reciprocity agreements are available for Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Utah, and Tennessee for their Commercial builders.

    Permitted Work

    This license allows construction work on buildings under four stories and with a budget under $500,000.
